D&H E5A

The " Four Aces", # 1111 and sister, 1112 were first offered around 1992 and have been an all time best seller. The model is in its forth version, as people keep on asking for it. It was developed from 1/4 scale drawings made during WW2 by a Binghamton, NY roundhouse worker / draftsman / model railroader, as well as D&H drawings, and numerous photos. The very accurate backhead was developed by interviewing a retired Carbondale, PA roundhouse worker who remembered them well.

The E5As were developed at the Colonie, NY shop, using boilers provided by Alco, just across town, and a number of parts recycled from the successful class E5 locos. They were the D&H's most powerful, and last, conventional Consolidations. The E5 As gave up to 72,000 pounds tractive effort, more than many larger, more modern types with trailing trucks--- that's the D&H for you. Primarily a freight locomotive, they did draw passenger, and troop train assignments. They ranged the system from Wilkes Barre, PA to upstate New York, where ever heavy hauling was required.

The latest version uses the Eddystone AS 36 drive, for great low speed operation, and plenty of pulling power. The frame, drivers and rods are from Bowser. Options include Digitrax or Soundtraxx T'sunami decoder, with 1" speaker. You can also order light or heavy weathering. Kadee # 5 couplers at both ends are standard, as is the smart looking black and white rods. Naturally, crew and coal tools are standard for greater realism. MV Products lenses are used in all lamps.
